Selfies With A
Conscience
Selfies have entirely taken over
the 21st Century largely thanks to the rapid emergence of smart
phones across the globe. You can’t go five minutes walking through a populated
area without seeing someone taking a selfie. In 2013, the word selfie was not
only added to the Oxford Dictionary but it was also named the Word of the year.
The trend had taken off. More than fifty percent of American Millennials
between the ages 18-33 have at some point in their life taken a selfie.( https://www.thoughtco.com/sociology-of-selfies-3026091).
There are
dozens of reasons for why exactly the selfie has grown into such a popular
trend, but the most explainable is the social aspect behind it. Often when
people think they look, they open up their camera of the phone and take a
selfie. It then immediately will get sent to a friend or posted online to show
off their looks and perhaps make others jealous. The selfie has become so
popular amongst our generation because many people view life in a competitive
fashion and always find the need to show off. Whether the reason be just to
display your face, or to show off an attractive desirable background, people
have the need to post it to make others jealous. To take it one step further,
it then becomes a competition of who can get the most likes on their posted
selfie online. When people get a lower than expected amount of likes on their
selfie, their morale is usually hurt and they may proceed to feel self-conscious
(if they didn’t already)
